What are Community Theater Directors Looking for?
When you’re auditioning for a community theater, you may get a little intimidated. However, community theater is much different than a professional, for-profit production. In a community theater, you may be auditioning for a specific group or show, such as an improv team, a dinner theater, or a big musical. But no matter the production, your auditions will still come down to a few things for the directors you’ll encounter.
To help you through the audition process, here are 5 things a community theater director will be looking for on A-Day!
Community theater or not, every director is looking for the right people to be in their productions. Therefore, sport a smile and showcase your talents and your positivity towards any challenge you may face!
As you may be trying out for multiple roles in a community theater production, your willingness to try new things will be tested. Whether it is learning a new accent or singing in a different opera voice type, you will need to show your openness to learn and adapt to the director’s needs.
Just as you may be trying out for multiple roles, you may be tasked with playing multiple roles in the production. Even if you join an improv troop, you will have to show your flexibility in playing multiple characters, as well as the emotional ups and downs that they experience throughout the show. The more range, the better!
Like in any production, how you take direction matters. So, during your auditions, show that you can be coached and check as any egos at the door. Remember that community theater is more than just a show, it is an opportunity to fine tune your current skills, grow where you may have weaknesses, and begin or prolong your acting career!
Just because your audiences at a community theater may be smaller, they’re still looking for the character to shine bright. Be bold and showcase your talents that make you stand out amongst the rest!
So whether you’re looking to star on the big stage or in a small production, the directors are always looking for a few things to stand out to them. As for community theater directors, they’re looking for someone to add to an amazing show and community!
